Everyone remembers the hit music of Queen. They were a band whose work continues to be popular even to this day. Therefore it is no wonder that We Will Rock You, the musical based on their back catalogue, is enjoying great success in London’s West End. It is a highly imaginative adventure penned by the comedian Ben Elton that takes audiences forwards in time to a shocking view of the future.
The Dominion Theatre must be thanking their lucky stars that We Will Rock You is housed on their stage, for the show has broken box office records since it opened. In one week in 2008 it managed to pull in more audience members than any other show for any week of the year. It meant that 20,000 people saw the world of Planet Mall transpire in front of their very eyes as the Bohemians set off on their epic quest.
This spectacle is set to some great songs, despite the strict ruling of the Killer Queen. So fans of Queen can rejoice in hearing some classic numbers. These include “Another One Bites The Dust”, “I Want To Break Free”, “Don’t Stop Me Now”, “A Kind Of Magic”, “Hammer To Fall”, “Who Wants To Live Forever”, “Radio Ga Ga”, “Under Pressure”, “Play The Game” and of course the title song itself “We Will Rock You”.
But, I hear you ask, what is the story of We Will Rock You? This is one of the musical’s most unique parts. It is not a story about Queen and its members; instead it is an original story that includes many elements of their hit songs. It is 300 years in the future and the Earth is now known as Planet Mall. It is ruled by the GlobalSoft Corporation under the tyrannical control of the Killer Queen. In this shocking society all free forms of thought and expression are banned, and that includes music.
So enter the Bohemians, a group of Freedom fighters (encompassing the characters of Galileo and Scaramouche) who are about to solve this problem and return the world to the Utopian society that was The Rhapsody. Soon people will have the freedoms they deserve and music can once again reign supreme. So they embark on their journey and must find a way to bring down The Killer Queen.
