London's West End
Theatre is a wonderful way to spend an evening, enjoying the companies of some world class entertainers as they take you on a gripping journey right in front of your eyes. This is why people from the around the world will enjoy great theatre with rich histories found both on New York’s Broadway and London’s West End (in an area known as ‘theatreland’).
Visiting a theatre in the West End means that you are stepping foot into a part of British tradition. This means that as well as great actors who many of us will have seen in films and television, West End theatres are enriched with great history, with many of them dating back to Victorian and Edwardian eras, with some of the more recent still dating as far back as the early twentieth century. Inside these impressive auditoriums, audiences are reminded of times gone by with designs reminiscent of neo-classical decorations as well as Romanesque touches or Victorian stylings that would have been popular at the time. A West End theatre ticket is not just a stage experience, it is also a gateway to the past.
It is for these reasons, that many of the theatres in London are protected buildings; many of them reach Grade II* status, which means that they will continue to stand for as long as can be see.
And these spaces are regularly filled with some world famous productions, including musicals, plays, cabaret shows, live comedy and live music as well as ballet and opera at the Coliseum. There is so much on offer that no-one can arrive and be out of place. Recent and ongoing musicals include Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia!, Hairspray, Blood Brothers, Carousel and Grease. Modern day plays include Black Watch, Waiting for Godot, Fat Pig, Three Days of Rain as well as some Shakespearean classics such as Hamlet and All’s Well That Ends Well. Beyond these, the show La Clique keeps those in search of cabaret occupied at the Hippodrome whilst comedians such as Billy Bailey, Eddie Izzard and Rob Brydon have been amongst those to host their live shows in recent years. There’s so much variety it’s hard to fault West End theatre.
So whether you need cheap theatre tickets or you are in need of a well deserved theatre break, the West End has a whole host of shows on offer. It means that your tickets could be for anything, from musicals to comedy. Then again, maybe they are ballet tickets or opera tickets – the possibilities are endless.
